One Hour a Year, a Month Before Renewal

Almost every problem in this subject comes from drift. Nothing dramatic happens; the policy simply stops describing the household. One deliberate hour a year fixes that, and the right time to spend it is about a month before renewal — early enough to change something, late enough that the current documents are relevant.

Gather four things

Compare this year against last year

Put the two declarations pages side by side. Look for anything present last year and missing now. A line that vanished is the most common explanation for a renewal that went up when nothing appeared to change. Several common items expire quietly.

Reconcile the household

Write down every licensed person living at the address. Compare against the drivers on the policy, in both directions. Add whoever arrived; remove whoever genuinely left.

Reconcile the vehicles

Every vehicle line against its registration card — year, make, model, trim, VIN, garaging address. Then the use code and the mileage figure against how each car is actually used now.

Re-examine three decisions

  1. Deductibles. Could you still produce that amount tomorrow? If your savings position changed in either direction, this decision should move with it.
  2. Liability limits. Has what you own changed? Limits protect assets, and assets grow quietly.
  3. Physical damage on older vehicles. A car crosses the threshold at some point; check whether yours has.

Refresh anything with an expiry

Transcripts, course certificates, membership evidence, payment methods approaching expiry. Send them now rather than after the renewal issues.

Then decide whether to compare

Not every year requires a full market comparison, but some years demand one: after a milestone date passes, after an incident ages off, after a household change, or when the renewal moved and the carrier cannot explain why. If any of those apply, this is the moment.

Write it down

Keep a one-page note each year: what you changed, what you asked, what you were told and by whom. Next year's review takes twenty minutes instead of an hour because the note tells you what has already been checked.

Send the declarations page and the odometer photos and we will do the pass with you.

More of what callers ask

When exactly should I do this?

About a month before renewal. That leaves time to submit documents or change something before the new term is issued.

Do I need last year's declarations page?

It makes the review far more useful, because comparing two documents finds vanished line items in seconds. Start keeping each one as it arrives.

Should I shop every year?

Not necessarily. Shop when something material has changed - a milestone date, an incident ageing off, a household change, or an unexplained increase.
