Read the Renewal, Not Just the Amount

Most renewal packets are opened, scanned for the payment figure, and filed. That figure is the least informative thing in the envelope. The documents around it tell you what the carrier changed, and that is the part worth ten minutes.

What is in the packet

The ten-minute read

  1. Compare the new declarations page against the outgoing one, line by line.
  2. Confirm every driver and vehicle is still correct.
  3. Confirm limits and deductibles have not moved.
  4. Look for line items that were there before and are not now.
  5. Check the mileage figure still resembles reality.

If the amount changed and you cannot see why from that comparison, call and ask the carrier to identify the specific driver of the change. "Rates went up" is not an answer; ask what changed on this policy.

Non-renewal is a different letter

A non-renewal notice means the carrier is not offering another term. Insurance Code section 662 governs the notice an insurer must give before non-renewing an automobile policy, so you should not be finding out at the last moment — but you do have to read your post. If one arrives, act immediately: you need replacement coverage in force before the current term ends, without a gap.

Do not confuse cancellation with non-renewal

Cancellation ends a policy mid-term. Non-renewal declines to write the next one. They arrive as different documents with different timetables. If you are unsure which you received, call and ask directly — the answer determines how much time you have.

The renewal is a decision point

It is the natural moment to submit refreshed documents, correct anything that drifted, and decide whether to compare. Treating it as a bill to pay wastes the one moment each year when the whole policy is genuinely open for review.

Keep the packet

File each renewal's declarations page. Next year, the comparison that takes two minutes with both documents takes an afternoon without them.

More of what callers ask

My renewal went up and nothing changed. Why?

Compare both declarations pages first - a vanished line item is the usual answer. If nothing is missing, ask the carrier to name the specific cause on your policy.

What is the difference between cancellation and non-renewal?

Cancellation ends a policy mid-term; non-renewal declines the next term. They have different timetables, so confirm which you received.

Do I have to accept the renewal?

No. It is an offer for the next term. It is also the natural point to compare, refresh documents, and correct anything that drifted.
