The Changes Nobody Thinks to Report

People report the changes that feel like insurance events — a new car, a new driver, an accident. The changes that point the other way go unreported for years, because nothing about them feels like it involves the insurance company.

How a mid-term change works

A change during the term is processed as an endorsement. Depending on what it is and how the carrier handles it, the effect may appear as an adjustment now or at the next renewal. Ask which, in plain words: "does this take effect today, and will I see it as a credit or at renewal?"

Do not wait for renewal to report something on the theory that it is simpler. Some changes only apply from the date they are reported, which means every month of delay is a month you paid for a situation that no longer existed.

Report the changes that go the other way too

This is not optional and it is not a technicality. A new driver in the household, a longer commute, a vehicle now used for work, a change of garaging address — all of those are material facts. A policy rated on stale information is a policy with an argument built into it, and the argument happens at the worst possible moment.

Get the revised document

After any change, ask for the updated declarations page and read it. Confirm the change is there and that nothing else moved while the carrier was in the file. Verbal confirmation is not a record; the declarations page is.

Set the habit

Anything that changes where you live, who drives, what you drive, or how far — that is the trigger for a call. Four categories, easy to remember, and between them they cover almost everything that should move a premium in either direction.

More of what callers ask

Will I get money back for a mid-term change?

Sometimes an adjustment applies immediately, sometimes it takes effect at renewal. Ask the carrier which applies to your specific change before assuming either.

Do I have to report working from home?

It is worth reporting because commuting distance feeds the mileage figure, which is a primary rating factor. Give a real revised number rather than a vague description.

What if I forgot to report something months ago?

Report it now. Most changes apply from the date reported, so the sooner it is on the record the better - and unreported facts that increase risk are worse left unsaid.
