Keep the Declarations Page From Your Old Policy
When you move to a new carrier, the single most useful document you can hand over is the declarations page from the policy you are leaving. It establishes that you were continuously insured, at what limits, and for how long — and each of those is something a new carrier is trying to work out anyway.
What it demonstrates
- Continuity. That there is no gap between the old policy ending and the new one starting.
- Prior limits. Carriers frequently look at the liability limits you already carried when considering what to offer.
- Tenure. How long you have held coverage, which is a different question from how long you have been licensed.
Continuous coverage is one of the things carriers weigh, and the declarations page is the cleanest evidence of it. A gap you cannot explain is worse than a gap you can document.
Get it before you cancel
This is the practical part. Once a policy is canceled, retrieving documents from the old carrier turns from a two-minute download into a phone queue. Download and save the current declarations page before the switch, not after. Keep a copy for every term you can lay hands on.
What to save, exactly
- The full declarations page — all pages, not just the first.
- The policy period dates, clearly showing start and end.
- The named insureds and listed drivers.
- Any endorsement schedule attached to it.

If there is a gap
Do not hide it. Carriers verify prior coverage, and an unexplained gap discovered later is a worse conversation than one disclosed at the start. There are ordinary reasons for gaps — a period without a car, deployment, time out of the country, a vehicle in storage — and a documented explanation lands very differently from a blank space.
If the gap was simply non-payment, that is also survivable. What matters is closing it now and keeping the next stretch unbroken, because continuity accrues from today forward regardless of what came before.
Keeping it going forward
Create one folder — digital is fine — and drop each renewal's declarations page into it as it arrives. It takes seconds and it means the next switch, the next lender request and the next dispute all have their evidence in one place. The same folder holds the rest of the documents carriers ask for.
Have your current declarations page ready and a quote takes far less of your time.

What if I cannot find my old declarations page?
Ask the previous carrier for a copy or a letter of experience. They can normally produce one, though it takes longer once the policy is closed.
Does a short gap matter?
Continuous coverage is something carriers weigh, and shorter gaps are better than longer ones. Document the reason and close it now - continuity builds from today forward.
Is a portal screenshot enough?
Usually not. Ask for the actual declarations page document, including every page and the endorsement schedule.
