When the Student Goes and the Car Stays

A young driver who moves away for school and leaves the vehicle behind is in a genuinely different situation from one who drives daily, and several carriers rate it that way. But the arrangement has conditions, and one of them is the reason it goes wrong.

The usual shape of it

Where a carrier offers this, it generally requires that the student be enrolled and living a stated distance from the garaging address — often expressed in miles — and that they do not keep a vehicle at school. The student stays listed on the policy, because they will drive when they come home, but they are rated differently while away. The distance requirement and the age limit are set by the carrier, not by the state.

The mistake

Taking the car with them and not saying so. The whole basis of the arrangement is that the vehicle stays at the garaging address. If the car is actually parked at a campus two hundred miles away, the vehicle's garaging location has changed, and that is a material fact the carrier is entitled to know. Discovering it at claim time is a bad place to have that conversation.

The same applies in reverse: if the student comes home and stays home — a leave of absence, a semester off, a job at home — tell the carrier. The rating should follow reality in both directions.

What they will ask for

Do not remove them from the policy

It is tempting to take a student off entirely while they are away. Think hard before doing that. They will drive the family car at holidays, and a driver who has been removed is a driver the policy may not be expecting. Being listed and rated as away is a different thing from being removed, and it is usually the right structure. Ask your carrier to explain in writing how it treats an unlisted resident who drives.

Combine it with the grades

A student who is away and doing well academically may be eligible for two separate items at the same carrier. They are assessed separately and need separate proof, so submit both together at the start of the term.

More of what callers ask

How far away does the school have to be?

The distance is defined by each carrier and is commonly stated in miles from the garaging address. Ask for the exact figure the company uses.

What if they take the car after all?

Tell the carrier. The vehicle's garaging location has changed and the arrangement depends on it staying home. This is not a detail worth being quiet about.

Should I just take them off the policy while they are away?

Usually not, if they will drive when home. Being listed and rated as away is different from being removed - ask your carrier how it treats an unlisted household driver.
