Lowering the Bill With Your Coverage Intact
The reflex when a premium hurts is to remove coverage. That works — it also removes protection. Here are the levers that lower the number without shrinking what you own, roughly in order of how much they move.
1. Compare carriers
The biggest lever, and it changes nothing about your policy. Same coverage, different company, different price — because each insurer files its own rating plan and they disagree about the same driver on purpose.
2. Correct your mileage
Miles driven is one of the factors California requires insurers to weigh first, and it's the one most often overstated by cautious guessing. If you've changed jobs, moved, or started working from home, the figure on file may be describing a life you no longer live.
3. Raise the deductible — carefully
This lowers the premium while keeping the coverage. The discipline: only as high as you could genuinely pay tomorrow. A deductible you can't cover converts a covered claim into a crisis.
4. Claim every discount you qualify for
Ask by name, bring the documentation. Nothing about your protection changes.
5. Review the vehicle-level choices
Coverage doesn't have to be uniform across cars. An older paid-off vehicle can carry a different shape than the newer one — that's tailoring, not cutting.
What we'd do last
Reduce liability limits. It's the cheapest-looking cut and the one that exposes you personally above the new ceiling. Exhaust the five above first. See them applied to your actual policy.
Check the policy is describing the right household
Before reaching for any lever, make sure the policy reflects reality. A driver listed who has moved out. A vehicle sold months ago. An address that changed. A commute that ended. Each of those is a correction rather than a cut, and corrections cost nothing to make. It is worth doing first because the rest of this list assumes the policy is describing the household you actually have — and often the biggest available improvement is simply that it currently is not.

How much can comparing realistically save?
It depends entirely on your profile and how far you sit from average — the spread is widest for drivers with violations, young drivers, and unusual vehicles. Your own comparison is the only figure that means anything.
Does paying in full save money?
Where a carrier structures it that way, yes — but it varies. Ask for the monthly and pay-in-full figures side by side and let them speak.
Will my insurer lower my rate if I just ask?
Asking can surface a missed discount or a policy detail worth correcting, so it's worth doing. It doesn't change their filed rating plan though — which is why the comparison remains the bigger lever.
